I was so excited to get out and play with my new Nikon D500 that I did something I never do; namely, go outside, voluntarily and for fun, during the frigid New Hampshire winter. Through the miraculous power of Facebook I found out about a group of racers who simply refuse to put their race cars away in the winter months. Instead, they wait for the ponds to freeze over, throw some chains on the tires, carve out an oval track with plow trucks and then go for it.

As it turns out there are a few of these clubs located in and around my area. This particular event was put on by the Lakes Region Ice Racing Club on Lee’s Pond in Moultonborough, NH. For less than a movie ticket, $10 per car load at the gate, you get an experience akin to a day at the track. There are no grandstands or bleachers set up. Instead, you drive your own car out onto the pond and park alongside the track. You can get out and wander around as much as you want, or, just sit in your car with the heat blasting. Either way, I couldn’t think of any better way to break in my new D500 than to freeze my <expletive deleted> off in the middle of a frozen pond shooting “trackside.”
