August 2023 Newsletter

Wait, It's August already?!

Yep! It sure is. July really flew by, huh? Feels like only yesterday we were watching 4th of July fireworks.

So, what have I been up to?

Well, I invested in a brand new state-of-the-art Westcott lighting system this month. These new wireless, battery-powered lights will allow me to take my portrait work out of the studio and into the world to create unique portraits that capture my clients in their element. I can’t even begin to describe my level of excitement to start putting these babies to good use.

Also in July, I covered my second race weekend of 2023 for Lime Rock Park (LRP), the FCP Euro Northeast Grand Prix presented by Liqui Moli (phew that’s a mouthful) is the shortest event on my LRP calendar at only 2 days, but it is by far the busiest. It is also my favorite event on my LRP calendar. The weekend was jam-packed with 4 races, 2 fan walks, autograph sessions, a celebration of women in motorsports, and tens of thousands of fans in attendance. The Northeast Grand Prix is a non-stop assault on the senses.

My exclusivity contract with LRP says that I can’t share much with you here, but below are a few of my favorites that I can share.

Remember earlier when I mentioned my new Westcott lighting system? Well, I'm looking for a few student-athletes willing to help me break them in and let me photograph them on the field in their uniforms.

If you know anyone who has a student-athlete and would be interested in participating in the model call please, do me a favor, and forward this email to them. Thanks!

What my clients say about working with me! Thanks Josh and Isaac!

“Working with Shawn was an absolute delight and the epitome of creative professionalism. Not only did he make my husband and I comfortable during the shoot, he did so with charm, wit, humor, and professionalism. His eye for detail and his ability to capture EXACTLY what you're looking for is par none. Absolutely recommend him for anyone looking for photography of any kind.” Josh Simonds and Isaac Vaars, owners of Deep Earth Arts in Littleton, NH.

Bookings for August, September and October are now open!

I am excited to announce the latest release in my Wall Art Collection!

"Water Drop 6"

This is a dramatic take on my macro water drop series. This one features blue liquid on a red background and captures the momentary drama of what happens when the drops collide. A few interesting data points about this image are that this collision and the shape seen here only lasted for around 5 microseconds and its actual size was approximately 3 inches tall. Cool, huh?

This photograph is available as a framed print, stretched canvas, metal print, and acrylic, and can be had in many sizes. It is displayed below as a 36”x36” unframed brushed metal print.

What I'm watching...

  • The Orville. My wife and I found this gem recently and have quickly blown through almost all of the 3 seasons available. It features Seth MacFarlane of Family Guy fame as Captain Ed Mercer, captain of The Orville. I will admit, when we first started watching this show I wanted it to be funny. Probably because of MacFarlane’s involvement, I expected a goofy comedy. But, what it actually is, is an homage to Star Trek, Star Wars, and the entire sci-fi genre. Now that my expectations have been reset I find The Orville to be an absolute joy to watch. A wonderful light-hearted end to the day.

 What I'm reading...

  • The Meaning in the Making by Sean Tucker. This is a book directed toward creatives. Sean himself is an accomplished photographer, but his philosophical approach to the human need to make and create has helped me to put what I do into a more complete perspective and reminded me not to lose touch with why I became a photographer in the first place.  What I'm listening to...

  • I have recently been rediscovering the music that raised me. Specifically, the eclectic rock that gets lumped together and is collectively known as “90s alternative.” Bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Primus, Nine Inch Nails, Alice in Chains, Cake, and Soundgarden. This music elicits deep feelings of nostalgia in me. Remembering long car rides with my friends, singing along at the top of our lungs. It also energizes me and I love working with it loudly filling the studio with grungy goodness.

BTW: I love recommendations! Whether it’s a TV show, movie, book, or music, throw an email my way with what you think I should check out. I’d love to hear from you.

If you’ve made it this far I can only say thank you. Until next month take care of yourself and be kind to your fellow humans.

Cheers!

Shawn
